This Social Security number is maintained throughout our life and will be necessary when applying for medical assistance, registering as an employee, collecting benefits, or receiving a retirement pension.
The Social Security number is granted by the General Treasury of Social Security (TGSS), which is the body that is responsible for the enrollments, applications, and discharges of employees.
What is the Social Security number?
As explained by the Ministry of Labor, Migration and Social Security, the Social Security Number (NUSS) is the personal identifier of each citizen in their relationship with Social Security.
The NUSS is mandatory for anyone who is a beneficiary of pensions, subsidies, or Social Security benefits, and it must be available in advance for membership or registration in any Social Security system.
This identifier is essential to request inclusion in the health system unless the person accesses as a beneficiary of the number of another holder.
Is the NUSS the same as the Social Security Affiliation Number (NAF)? The answer is yes, both numbers coincide. The NUSS becomes the NAF when a person first starts a job that determines his inclusion in the Social Security System.
Who can apply for a Social Security number?
All citizens, employees, and self-employed people who do not have a Social Security number can apply for one. Also, the employer must request the Social Security number of the person they are going to hire if they do not have one.
How to apply for a Social Security number with the Digital Certificate?
If you have a digital certificate and wish to request the Social Security number for the first time, you can head to the Electronic Headquarters of Social Security.
Once inside this website, click on Citizens > Membership and Registration > Assignment of Social Security number and enter using your digital certificate.
Personal data must be completed and accept the SMS delivery to your mobile phone once done.
How to request the Social Security number for an employee?
To request the Social Security number for an employee who does not have it yet, we must access the RED System.
When clicking on Access to the RED System Online we must enter the certificate of the RED authorized manager and once done, click on Attention and Support to the Authorized > Registration, consultation and modification of cases.
We enter a new case, fill in the form and attach the necessary documents:
- Work certificate signed by the employee and employer.
- Application form, which in this case would be Form TA1.
- Identification documents of the employee and employer.
