If you want to renew the DNI, you should know that this has become a complicated task for those who do not plan their appointment in advance. Managing to find a space in the police stations can be a headache if you do not have several months available. So that renewing the DNI does not pose any problem, it is advisable to plan the appointment in advance and follow the steps that are given on the Police website.

Online appointment to renew the DNI

To request an appointment through the internet it is necessary to be in possession of a DNI or NIE. Thus, Spanish citizens of legal age who do not have this document or Spanish citizens of foreign parents without a NIE must “go to an issuing office and request the procedure in person“, according to what can be read on the Police website.
The online appointment request is available for the first registration of a child or ward who does not have a DNI yet. In this case, the appointment must be individual. Multiple appointments can be requested in all other cases, for the applicant and up to three companions.
Follow the steps of the online system to renew the DNI
Once it has been verified that the requirements to request the online appointment for the renewal or first processing of the DNI have been met, the user must click on the “Start the application” option. After that, the system will ask you to fill in a series of personal data, such as the number and letter of the document, date of validity, and the “equipo de expedición” (the 9-character code located on the back of the DNI card, kind of an issuance code).
If you do not have all the information (for example, if you do not know the equipo de expedición because your ID was stolen), you must click on the link that appears in the bottom section which corresponds to “Loss and subtraction of the document“. After filling in your name and your parents’ name and inputting a functional email, you will immediately be sent the expiration date of the DNI and the equipo de expedición so that you can continue with your appointment request.
The next step that the system will show is selecting which procedure you wish to carry out (in this case, is the renewal of the DNI). Once you have clicked on this option, a text will appear on the screen for you to choose the nearest province. When you click on the one that best suits your address, the available days and hours for the coming months will appear.
Once the day, time and police station have been selected, you must include a mobile phone and an email so they can send you the appointment confirmation. When you click on “Confirm“, your appointment to renew the DNI will have been set.
Appointment by phone to renew the DNI

What documentation must be presented to renew the DNI
- Current passport photograph on photographic paper.
- Previous DNI: if it is a renewal, you must deliver the expired document at the same time, which will be returned to you once physically disabled if requested.
- Town hall Empadronamiento certificate: only for cases in which the citizen has changed address.
If the DNI has been lost or stolen, the user must fill in Form 601 which will be provided at the time of the appointment (it cannot be requested in advance).
How much does it cost to renew the DNI?
The fixed rate for both the renewal of the DNI and the first issue is 12 euros. This amount has been cancelled (i.e. it is free) in the case of renewal of the card due to data changes. Large families, with three or more children, do not have to pay the fees for the issuance and renewal of the DNI or passport.
The fee can be paid online if you have a digital certificate, but you cannot pay by card at the police station, so all payments need to be made in cash.
