What is the Autorización de Regreso?
It is a document issued by the police that will allow you to leave and subsequently return to Spain in case you temporarily do not have your physical residence card or your permit is being renewed.
On the other hand, you must take into account that the return authorization functions only and exclusively as a return document to Spain. This means, it will only be useful for direct flights from your country of origin (or the country where you have been) to Spanish territory.
Therefore, if you have to make a stopover in any country of the Schengen area (such as Italy, France, or Germany, for example) to get to Spain, you could have problems. Although this is not the most common thing to do, you should take it into account.

Documentation required to apply for the authorization of return
- The application Form EX13 , marking with an X your situation in the section number 4 "Data related to the application".
- Passport and a copy of it.
- Fingerprinting certificate, application for initial card issuance or renewal, or confirmation of duplicate (depending on your situation).
- Copy and original of your residency card.
- Evidence of payment of the corresponding fee. This is Form 790-052 if the procedure is carried out at the Immigration Office, or Form 790-012 if the procedure is carried out at the Police Station.
- All documents must be legalized and/or apostilled and translated into Spanish or the co-official language of the territory where the application is submitted.
Data to be considered during the application
- In order to request a return authorization, the authorized subject, who is a foreigner, must do so either personally or through a representative.
- The application can be made in person at the Immigration Office or the Police Station corresponding to the province where the foreigner resides. Find your most convenient immigration office.
- Ensure payment is made within ten working days before the issuance of the return authorization. Payment must be made at the time the application is submitted for the procedure and should be completed within ten working days. Check the applicable fees for the return authorization procedure.
- This document will not be provided if you are a minor or if you are unable to attend personally to claim it. However, if you suffer from illness or transitory physical impediment accredited by medical certificate or hospital report signed by a registered physician); in this case, a power of attorney may be used.
- The return authorization will be valid for no more than 90 days counted from the date of return.
- The autorización de regreso may be used for all departures and subsequent return required during the term of the authorization.
