What is the residence certificate for foreigners?
It is an official document issued by the National Police or the Immigration Office that certifies that a foreigner has legal residence in Spain.
It is different from the Foreigner’s Identity Card (TIE) or the EU Citizen Registration Certificate, although in some cases it may complement these documents.

When is a residence certificate required?

The Certificate of Residence in Spain is requested for several situations, such as:
- Open a bank account: Many banks require this certificate to open an account.
- Applying for Spanish nationality: You will need to prove your legal and continuous residence in the country.
- Obtaining permanent or long-term residency: This certificate helps to prove that you have lived in Spain for at least 5 years.
- Manage tax and Social Security matters: May be required for certain fees and taxes.
- Apply for your driving license: You may need this document to complete the procedure.
It is important to note that both EU and non-EU citizens residing in Spain can apply for this certificate.
Requirements and documentation
- Demonstrate a valid reason: You must have a sufficient and justified reason to apply for the certificate, such as professional, economic or social interests in Spain.
- To be in a regular situation: You cannot be in an irregular migratory situation.
- Application form Modelo EX15, marking the option “CERTIFICADO - De residente” in section 4.
- All documents must be legalized and/or apostilled and translated into Spanish or the co-official language of the territory where the application is submitted.
- Your full ID card or passport: If you cannot present these documents, a travel document or registration card is also valid.
- A supporting document explaining the reasons for your request.
