As a foreigner, you can apply for a driving license in Spain through the exchange process.

You must submit an application at the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico corresponding to your place of residence, along with the required documentation, which generally includes your valid foreign driver’s license, residence certificate, passport and a photograph.

It is required to present the original documentation of the vehicle, such as the documents of importation, certificate of conformity, valid insurance, DNI or NIE, and proof of payment of fees, among others.

The requirements may vary according to the type of vehicle and origin, so it is advisable to ask the DGT or a specialized manager for detailed information in your specific case.

Yes, you can make a change of ownership using your passport as your identification document.

If you change your address, you must update the address on your Spanish driving license and vehicle registration certificate.

To do so, you must present the request for change of address at the Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico, together with the corresponding form, the DNI/NIE, the driving license or circulation license, and proof of payment of fees, if necessary.

It is important to make this update within a certain period of time to avoid possible penalties.

As the DGT website indicates:

To change the ownership of a vehicle due to the owner passing away, a special procedure must be followed that involves submitting certain documents, such as the person’s will, and paying the Inheritance and Donations Tax.

There are several reasons why you may not be able to change the ownership of a vehicle, such as the existence of liens, legal prohibitions or non-compliance with administrative requirements.
