Complete guide to apply for unemployment benefits in Spain
What are unemployment benefits?
The “Paro”, or contributory benefit, is a financial assistance granted for a limited period of time to workers who have lost their jobs.
Who can claim it?
Salaried workers are eligible for unemployment benefits if they have lost their job for reasons for which they are not responsible, provided that they have contributed at least 360 days in the last six years.
Those who have worked for less than one year are NOT eligible for unemployment benefits. It is important to note that those who voluntarily resign or request a voluntary leave of absence are not eligible to receive unemployment benefits.
In addition, there is a benefit for the self-employed called “cessation of activity benefit”, which is different from traditional unemployment and is subject to specific requirements, such as the payment of all Social Security contributions, a minimum number of contributions, and justification of the reason for the cessation, such as divorce or significant loss of income.

Requirements to apply for unemployment benefits in Spain
- Be affiliated to the Social Security, having paid the contributions for unemployment benefits.
- Commit to actively seeking new employment (referred to as an activity commitment).
- Contribute at least 360 days in the last 6 years.
- Not be over 65 years of age (i.e., not be of retirement age).
- The cause of dismissal is not attributable to the employee.
- Registering in the job seeker registry (SEPE).
Other types of unemployment benefits in Spain
Capitalization of unemployment: Also known as “pago único”, this option allows the unemployed to receive their unemployment benefit in a single payment to start a business or self-employment activity.
This single payment can be used for the initial investment needed to start the activity or to cover Social Security contributions as a self-employed worker for a certain period.
Beneficiaries must present a viable self-employment project and apply for capitalization through the State Public Employment Service (SEPE).

Compatibility of unemployment with working as an autónomo: This option allows the unemployed to start a self-employment activity and continue collecting unemployment benefits for a while. In general, those who opt for this route can maintain their benefit for a period of up to 270 days while they establish themselves as self-employed workers.
This measure seeks to encourage self-employment among the unemployed without them immediately losing the economic security provided by their unemployment benefits.

Victor Gonzalez11/08/2025 Javier Mendez05/08/2025 Aaron Parr31/07/2025 I am so grateful to have found Entre Trámites. The process of moving to Spain is incredibly complicated and slow, but I was able to get my residency certificate in just 6 weeks. The team are very responsive, due diligent, and empathetic. I was able to understand what I needed to do at every step, and I could not done this without them. Special thanks to Jesica Delgado, who was my gestor for the NIE, Padron, and CUE process. Jesica went above and beyond to help me with my residency application. I'm blown away by Jesica's due diligence and competence. When I was in a pinch, she was always very responsive and supportive. And Jesica always made things super clear. Also Julieth Bercerra has been brilliant as an accountant. The process of becoming autonomo is also confusing, but she has helped understand what I need to do at every step. It is such a pleasure to work with her now and moving forwards. Lastly Daniela Jarma was brilliant at onboarding me into the process. I really did not know enough about getting residency in Spain, but she listened to my situation and presented me with options in a way that was so easy to understand. From start to finish, and on-going, I have the utmost appreciate for the work of this company. We had so many questions about Spanish taxes, moving timelines, and how to handle our U.S. retirement accounts. He explained everything clearly and gave us a plan that made sense for our situation. His email follow-up was incredibly thorough—it included all the details we needed to take the right steps. Honestly, I don’t know how we would have figured this out without his guidance. FAQ
General Info
Capitalization focuses on using the accumulated amount of unemployment benefits to undertake a new business activity, while compatibilization with working as an autónomo allows receiving benefits while working as a self-employed person, subject to certain conditions and requirements.
Both concepts offer options to support unemployed people in their transition to entrepreneurship or self-employment.
If you are in the first days of your new stage as a self-employed and you are undecided about the possibility of submitting the application for the compatibility of unemployment, you may have good news. The application must be submitted within 15 days of starting self-employment.
In the scenario in which you have been hired full or part-time, the compatibility will start from the date of commencement of such employment. If the application is submitted after the established deadline, the compatibility will start from the date of the application, without deducting the days already elapsed.
This benefit is a non-contributory benefit, which means that it can be applied regardless of whether or not contributions have been made.
The condition for receiving it is to participate in a job training plan during the 6 months in which the benefit is received, with the aim of facilitating the job search.
