What is degree homologation?
The homologation of degrees is an administrative process whereby an academic degree obtained abroad is officially recognized as equivalent to a degree of the same level in the country where homologation is requested.
Difference between homologating and validating a degree in Spain
Homologation:
- Objective: To recognize a foreign qualification as equivalent to a Spanish qualification of the same level.
- Effects: It allows access to regulated professions in Spain and to postgraduate studies.
- Requirements: The qualification must be related to a regulated profession in Spain and meet the training requirements for that profession.
- Procedure: It is carried out before the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training.
Validation (Convalidación):
- Objective: To recognize the validity of foreign studies for academic purposes.
- Effects: Allows access to postgraduate studies and the validation of subjects.
- Requirements: The studies must be related to an official Spanish degree and meet the requirements in terms of content and course load.
- Procedure: This is done at the university where you wish to pursue your postgraduate studies.

What documents are required for the homologation of a degree?
If you wish to settle and work in Spain using your professional or academic qualifications, you can opt to have your university or high school diploma homologated.
This process allows your foreign degree to be officially recognized, enabling you to continue your studies or practice your profession in the country and take advantage of the opportunities available.

To have a high school diploma recognized in Spain:
- The high school diploma must have been obtained in an official education system in the country of origin.
- The studies completed must have a workload and curriculum content equivalent to those of the Spanish Baccalaureate.
Documentation:
- Original high school diploma and its apostilled or legalized copy.
- Original curriculum and its copy translated into Spanish.
- Original certified grades and a copy translated into Spanish.
- Valid passport or identity document.
- Duly completed application form.
To have a university degree recognized in Spain:
- The university degree must have been obtained from a higher education institution officially recognized by the country of origin.
- The studies completed must have a workload and curriculum content equivalent to those of the corresponding Spanish degree.
Documentation:
- Original university degree and its apostilled or legalized copy.
- Original curriculum and its copy translated into Spanish.
- Original certified grades and a copy translated into Spanish.
- Valid passport or identity document.
