Complete guide to the compatibility of unemployment benefits in Spain

What is the unemployment compatibility in Spain?
The“compatibilización del paro” in Spain refers to the possibility of combining unemployment benefits (known as ‘el paro’) with some other work activity.
People who are receiving unemployment benefits and wish to start a self-employment activity can continue to receive the benefits.
Requirements for unemployment compatibility in Spain
Previously, only persons under 30 years of age were able to obtain their benefits simultaneously with their self-employed status. However, this restriction has now been lifted, thus eliminating any age limitation. To access this option, the following criteria must be met:
- Be receiving the contributory benefit, which is acquired by having at least 360 days of contributions.
- Be registered as self-employed.
- Make the request for this measure within the first 15 working days from the beginning of the self-employed activity.
- Not to be employed full-time or part-time during the compatibility period.
What happens if I am not yet autónomo?
If you are receiving unemployment benefits and are considering registering as self-employed, you have three alternatives:
- Temporarily suspending the payment of the subsidy: It is common that when you receive a job offer as an autónomo or when you start your own business you decide to interrupt the benefit you are receiving. The question arises, “Will I be able to resume my unemployment benefit at a later date?” The answer is yes. If the self-employment activity lasts between 24 and 60 months, you will be able to recover the benefit.
- Compatibility of unemployment benefits with self-employment: If you want to start a business as a self-employed person but you also need to continue receiving unemployment benefits, you can do so for a maximum of 270 days or the remaining time you have to receive them, provided that you request it within 15 days from the start of your activity.
- Capitalizing the unemployment benefit: Another option is to use the accumulated benefit to finance the start-up of your business. You can receive in a single payment the remaining amount of your contributory unemployment benefit, as long as you have at least three monthly payments left to receive. It is important to note that if you opt for this alternative, you must apply for it before starting your self-employment activity, and you cannot do so again if you have already used this option in the last four years.

Siddharth Nambiar18/08/2025 Great team. Gareth Jones14/08/2025 Entre Trámites helped me apply for my visa to live and work in Spain. They also helped me with additional information that was requested for the application. The application was successful and I'm very happy with the service provided. Marcela Herrera12/08/2025 Lo hemos usado para tramitar el Nie en Bilbao y ahora para el manejo de facturas. Super recomendable y profesionales. Victor Gonzalez11/08/2025 Javier Mendez05/08/2025 Aaron Parr31/07/2025 I am so grateful to have found Entre Trámites. The process of moving to Spain is incredibly complicated and slow, but I was able to get my residency certificate in just 6 weeks. The team are very responsive, due diligent, and empathetic. I was able to understand what I needed to do at every step, and I could not done this without them. Special thanks to Jesica Delgado, who was my gestor for the NIE, Padron, and CUE process. Jesica went above and beyond to help me with my residency application. I'm blown away by Jesica's due diligence and competence. When I was in a pinch, she was always very responsive and supportive. And Jesica always made things super clear. Also Julieth Bercerra has been brilliant as an accountant. The process of becoming autonomo is also confusing, but she has helped understand what I need to do at every step. It is such a pleasure to work with her now and moving forwards. Lastly Daniela Jarma was brilliant at onboarding me into the process. I really did not know enough about getting residency in Spain, but she listened to my situation and presented me with options in a way that was so easy to understand. From start to finish, and on-going, I have the utmost appreciate for the work of this company. If you need support with paperwork, I would recommend no one else! mairys colina24/07/2025 Excelente atencion y servicio Agustina Huertas23/07/2025 MUHAMMED SHAMIL KK23/07/2025 Vic Hernandez22/07/2025 Louis made what felt like an overwhelming process so much easier. We had so many questions about Spanish taxes, moving timelines, and how to handle our U.S. retirement accounts. He explained everything clearly and gave us a plan that made sense for our situation. His email follow-up was incredibly thorough—it included all the details we needed to take the right steps. Honestly, I don’t know how we would have figured this out without his guidance. Highly recommend him to anyone considering a move to Spain!Google rating score: 4.6 of 5, based on 433 reviews

FAQ
General Info
Capitalization focuses on using the accumulated amount of unemployment benefits to undertake a new business activity, while compatibilization with working as an autónomo allows receiving benefits while working as a self-employed person, subject to certain conditions and requirements.
Both concepts offer options to support unemployed people in their transition to entrepreneurship or self-employment.
If you are in the first days of your new stage as a self-employed and you are undecided about the possibility of submitting the application for the compatibility of unemployment, you may have good news. The application must be submitted within 15 days of starting self-employment.
In the scenario in which you have been hired full or part-time, the compatibility will start from the date of commencement of such employment. If the application is submitted after the established deadline, the compatibility will start from the date of the application, without deducting the days already elapsed.
This benefit is a non-contributory benefit, which means that it can be applied regardless of whether or not contributions have been made.
The condition for receiving it is to participate in a job training plan during the 6 months in which the benefit is received, with the aim of facilitating the job search.
